International Prize Ludovic Trarieux: the award given by lawyers to a lawyer

The award ceremony of the 17th International Human Rights Prize “Ludovic Trarieux” took place in Berlin on November 30th, 2012. This award is “the award given by lawyers to a lawyer” who “throughout his career has illustrated, by his activity or his suffering, the defence of human rights, the promotion of defence rights, the supremacy of law, and the struggle against racism and intolerance in any form”

On November 30th, Federal Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger awarded the « Ludovic Trarieux » Prize to Muharrem Erbey who is in prison in Turkey. His wife received the prize on his behalf.

Muharrem Erbey is since December 2009 placed currently in pre-trial detention in the notorious prison of Diyarbakir in the South-east of Turkey.

Created in 1984, this award has been given for the first time to Nelson Mandela who was detained for 23 years in South Africa.

The UIA has been a partner for several years of the “Ludovic Trarieux” International Human Rights Prize.
