It was with great joy that I assumed my duties in Budapest. As you are aware, the commitment required of a UIA President is a daily business and there has been no dearth of activities since the year began.

I have been representaing the association in the multifarious activities that it organises or to which it is invited, in order to showcase our association, its activities, its involvement in the protection of human rights and lawyers, to recall the fundamental principles of the profession and to convey the values of multiculturalism and respect for the rule of law.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our future meets. Apart from our Boumerdes seminar on the death penalty, the Barcelona seminar on real estate law, the Lisbon seminar on the marketing of law firms and the New York seminar on mergers and acquisitions, we will also meet in Geneva in the United Nations building for our Bar Leaders' Briefing, on 2 June. It is exceptionnaly open this year to our individual members.

Several experts will be dealing with two major issues before lawyers: The Rule of Law, a necessity for the maintenance of peace? and The responsibility of lawyers and bars vis-à-vis refugees.

The Geneva meeting will also give us the opportunity to celebrate UIA's 90th anniversary during a gala dinner. We will recall UIA's long history and raise funds for the programme of the International Committe of the Red Cross for refugees. 

I am therefore counting on your presence in large numbers to this double event.
