UIA Members' Survey - Results

On January 20, 2015, UIA launched an on-line questionnaire aimed at its members in order to gain a better understanding of their expectations from the association.

By February 24, 2015, UIA had a 6% rate of return for the questionnaire, enabling it to analyse the results and draw the conclusions given in the presentation below.

Among the foremost of the many reasons for membership were: information, training and business opportunities.

“It is the establishment of an international network that is the primary motivator for our member lawyers” declared the association’s President, Miguel Loinaz. For 95% of the respondents, the international network was an “important” if not “extremely important” reason for joining the association.

There were three needs with regard to the network that lay behind their membership.

- The association’s network enabled lawyers to keep informed about legal practices at the international level

- The network enabled lawyers to get training

- The network enabled lawyers to take up business opportunities (47% of respondents).

Among the second set of reasons for membership were the opportunity to take part in major discussions on professional issues and to follow developments in law.

Finally, joining an international association like UIA also gave them the opportunity to join their voices to those of other colleagues and get their opinion heard. 47% of UIA members replied that their reason for joining the association was the importance of the defence of human rights for them – something for which the association fought.
